Understanding

Advanced Denture Solutions

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They can restore function, improve your appearance, and support your facial structure. Modern dentures are more advanced than ever, offering a natural fit and look that blends seamlessly with your smile.

There are three main types of dentures:

  • Full Dentures – Replace all teeth in either the upper or lower jaw.
  • Partial Dentures – Replace a smaller number of missing teeth and are supported by your remaining natural teeth.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures – A more secure and stable alternative, these dentures are anchored by dental implants placed in your jawbone. They provide extra confidence when eating or speaking and help maintain bone structure over time.

At North Queensland Family Dental, we carefully design each denture to suit your needs, ensuring it feels comfortable, functions properly, and restores your confidence.

What's Involved

Creating your new dentures involves a series of steps to ensure they fit securely and suit your individual needs:

  1. Initial Consultation – We examine your mouth, discuss your goals, and explain your options for dentures.
  2. Impressions & Measurements – Detailed impressions and measurements of your mouth are taken to ensure a precise fit.
  3. Try-In Stage – A model denture is created for you to try, allowing adjustments to be made before the final version.
  4. Final Denture – Your custom denture is crafted and fitted, ensuring it feels comfortable and functions properly.
  5. Follow-Up Care – We’ll see you for adjustments as needed and provide advice on caring for your new dentures.

For implant-supported dentures, a minor surgical procedure is required to place the implants before the denture is fitted. This offers greater stability, especially for lower dentures, and prevents movement or slipping.

FAQ

  • About Dentures

    Are dentures comfortable?
Yes. With modern techniques and custom design, dentures are much more comfortable than they used to be. Some adjustment is normal at first, but most patients adapt quickly.

    How long do dentures last?
Dentures typically last between 5–10 years, depending on wear and changes in your mouth. Over time, they may need relining or replacement to maintain a proper fit.

Can I eat normally with dentures?
Yes. It may take some practice, but most patients are able to eat a wide variety of foods comfortably once they adjust to their dentures.

Will dentures change how I speak?
You may notice slight changes initially, but as you get used to your dentures, your speech should return to normal. Practising speaking out loud can help speed up the adjustment.

What if my dentures feel loose?
A loose denture can occur if your gums and bone change over time. If this happens, we can adjust or reline your denture to restore a comfortable fit.

  • About Implant-Supported Dentures

    What are implant-supported dentures?
They are dentures that attach to dental implants placed in your jawbone, providing a more stable and secure fit compared to traditional removable dentures.

    Are implant-supported dentures permanent?
They can be either fixed (only removed by your dentist) or removable, depending on the type of attachment used. Both options offer far greater stability than traditional dentures.

    Do implant-supported dentures hurt?
The implant procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and most patients report only mild discomfort afterwards. Once healed, the dentures themselves are usually more comfortable than conventional ones.

How long do implant-supported dentures last?
With proper care, dental implants can last for decades, and the attached dentures generally last longer than traditional ones due to their secure support.

    Am I a candidate for implant-supported dentures?
Most healthy adults are suitable, but adequate jawbone density is needed for implant placement. We’ll assess your mouth during a consultation to determine if this option is right for you.
